Abstract

In this seminar, I will talk about specific characteristics of Interaction and Accessibility for Emergency Management Information Systems (EMIS). First, I will describe an ontology we have developed for codifying a knowledge base of different abilities to react to different kind of alarms/emergencies and that has been built by investigating different online communities, including elderly people, people with disabilities and experts working in accessibility.

Secondly, I will talk about the use of social networks and web mashups for EMIS, including flexible model processes and visual notations.

Abstract

The Human Computer-Interaction Group at NASA Ames is focused on developing large scale useful and usable software systems for NASA's space missions. For decades, NASA has been a hardware (i.e., rockets) oriented organization where safety is paramount. Software capabilities therefore evolve slowly, especially for human space flight where major new programs arise only every twenty to thirty years (e.g., Apollo, Shuttle, Space Station, Constellation). Over the past seven years NASA AMES has hired fourteen graduates from CMU's MHCI Program. The HCI Group's work on mission systems has had a significant impact across the agency and HCI has become a recognized competence at NASA -- one that space missions are willing to pay for. This is a significant change from the status of HCI at NASA a decade ago and it is due, at least in part, to having a team of bright and technically able people that work together well. However, our assessment of what has made the team so effective points to the fact that we have a shared "toolbox" of methods that work well in the field, as well as a shared understanding of the most difficult part of applying HCI methods: consistently and repeatably turning user research into designs that actually address user needs. This talk will discuss the role that the application of HCI methods has played in the development of systems for the Mars Exploration Rovers Mission, the Phoenix Mars Scout Mission, the Mars Science Laboratory Mission, the International Space Station, and the new Constellation Program.
